Chapter Twenty-Five

Dax

I waited for that text like a dog staring at a door waiting for its owner to come home.

And nobody owned me.

That was one thing I noticed at a young age with my parents, their lives, our lives, and the lives of those around me.

Everyone had someone to report to.

I loved my sister and all, but look at the way she was with my parents.

And, hell, it was the same for Sydney and her parents.

Since she was on my mind already…

But for me, I knew I needed to break away and have my own way of living life.

That’s why I busted my ass the way I did with Hudson. We had our fun, sure, but we both knew what was at stake. Hudson had nothing to prove because he knew he was going to take over his father’s company someday. But in his heart he wanted to show the world it wasn’t just about having the same last name as his father.

It drove us.

It made us who we were.

And when the deal went through and we looked at each other, knowing we had pulled it off…

Yet I checked my phone before I got into the shower.

Just in case Sydney wanted a little morning romp before work.

I showered and caught myself peeking out… just in case…

Those three words were an excuse and my curse.

I exited the bathroom wearing nothing but a towel, face down in my phone.

“I sure hope that towel is tied tight.”

“Morning, Gemma,” I said.

“Coffee is poured. Breakfast is made.”

“Lou?”

“Me,” she said.

Gemma made the best homestyle breakfasts. Nothing fancy. Scrambled eggs and bacon. But the way she made her eggs… the eggs were burnt but not in a bad way. And the bacon was juicy enough to make you want more but cooked enough that it had just the slightest crisp to it.

Everything tasted perfect, including the coffee.

And yet I kept looking at my phone.

“Big meeting?” Gemma asked.

“No. Why?”

“You keep looking at your phone,” she said. “You only do that when you’re nervous. Or anxious.”

“Can we go back to when you just cleaned this place and knew nothing about me?” I asked.

“You broke that barrier, not me.”

“You caught me on a bad night.”

“I caught you with cigarettes and whiskey, Dax. And you were crying.”

“I was not crying that night.”

Gemma tilted her head.

“You said you’d never tell anyone,” I said.

“I didn’t tell anyone. I’m just talking to you.”

I swallowed hard.

Yeah, so, Gemma caught me on the anniversary of Buster’s death, on the floor, drunk, with a pack of cigarettes, crying, and I told her everything about my best friend. That’s when she told me about her son. And we just clicked from there. I didn’t like to think of her as a cleaning lady or a cleaning person. So we were this.

And I wasn’t sure what this was.

“Something is on your mind,” Gemma said.

“Something is always on my mind,” I said. I pushed from the counter. “That was good.”

“Did you even taste it?”

“Not the first time someone’s asked me that,” I said with a smile.
